Do sugary treats lead to overall health problems?

Recent studies have shown a correlation between dental health and overall health especially heart health, meaning that how we look after our teeth can affect our overall wellness.

By maintaining good oral hygiene, we can prevent periodontitis which is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by bacteria in the mouth. Periodontitis causes a destruction of the connective tissue and bone that support the teeth eventually leading to tooth loss.

The chronic inflammation of periodontitis has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease as bacteria introduced to the bloodstream from periodontal plaques can induce platelet activation, aggregation, and thrombosis which can lead to blood clots and exacerbate chronic conditions like high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease.

There's also a link between diabetes and gum disease. This is a bidirectional relationship, gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels, and poorly managed diabetes can worsen gum problems. In order to enhance general health and glucose control, patients with diabetes must prioritise good dental hygiene and the management of gum disease.

Respiratory diseases can also be affected by poor oral hygiene as tooth decay and gum disease allows bacteria to enter the lungs causing respiratory infections and inflammation.

Even our mental health can be linked closely to oral health. Poor teeth can cause low self-esteem and low confidence leading to fewer social interactions and social isolation and we know that patients with anxiety and depression are less likely to maintain their oral health.

So, it’s important to look after your teeth with:

Regular Brushing, at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
Flossing to remove the plaque between your teeth.
Regular Visits to the dentist and dental hygienist, every 6 months
Healthy Diet, avoiding sugary foods and drinks.

Maintaining good oral health is a critical component of overall physical and mental well-being. Poor oral health leads to poorer health outcomes in general, which highlights the essential link between a healthy mouth and a healthy body.

So, this Halloween, if you are thinking about eating all those sugary treats, make sure you brush your teeth.
