Hay Fever Treatments

Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is a common condition that affects millions of people around the world. It is caused by an allergic reaction to pollen from grasses, trees, and weeds.

The symptoms

Hay fever is a common condition that occurs when the body's immune system overreacts to allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.

The symptoms of hay fever typically include a runny or blocked nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes, and an itchy throat or ears. In some cases, hay fever can also cause a cough, headache, and fatigue.

These symptoms can be bothersome and interfere with daily activities, but with proper diagnosis and treatment, they can be managed effectively. If you suspect you may be suffering from hay fever, it's important to seek medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Our treatments

Our experienced doctors will work with you to find a treatment plan that is tailored to meet your individual needs and help you manage your hay fever symptoms effectively.

Antihistamines

Antihistamines are a type of medication that blocks the action of histamine, a chemical that is released by the body in response to an allergic reaction.

By blocking histamine, antihistamines can help relieve symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose. They are available over the counter or by prescription and come in various forms, including tablets, liquids, and nasal sprays.

Eye Drops

If your hay fever symptoms include itchy and watery eyes, your doctor may recommend using eye drops.

These drops contain antihistamines or other medications that can help relieve the itching and redness associated with hay fever. They can be applied directly to the eyes and are available over the counter or by prescription.

Nasal Sprays

Nasal sprays are another treatment option for hay fever. They work by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, which can help relieve symptoms such as congestion and runny nose.

Nasal sprays are available over the counter or by prescription and come in various forms, including corticosteroids and antihistamines.

Kenalog injections

If your hay fever symptoms are severe and other treatments have not been effective, your doctor may recommend a Kenalog injection.

This is a type of corticosteroid injection which can help reduce inflammation throughout the body and relieve symptoms such as congestion, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

Kenalog injections are only available by prescription and are usually reserved for severe cases of hay fever.

Please note the hay fever injection is only available to those aged 18 and above. It is not suitable for all patients. You may not be able to have it if you have other medical problems such as diabetes or if you are on certain medications.

Please phone the clinic for advice if you take regular medication (other than antihistamines) or you have pre-existing medical conditions
