What is a Post-Natal Check?

What is a Post-Natal Check?

A post-natal check is a routine health check-up for both you and your baby, typically carried out around six weeks after birth. It’s an opportunity to ensure you’re recovering well, both physically and emotionally, while also checking on your baby’s development and overall health.

This appointment is vital to discuss how you're feeling, address any concerns, and ensure both you and your baby are receiving the care and support you need.

What Does the Post-Natal Check Involve?

Your post-natal check will include a thorough assessment of your health and your baby’s well-being. Here’s what you can expect:

For You:

  • Physical Recovery: We’ll check how your body is healing after childbirth, including your stitches (if applicable) and how you're feeling in general.
  • Mental Health: The emotional and mental challenges of motherhood are just as important. We’ll discuss how you’re coping and look for signs of postnatal depression or anxiety, offering support if needed.
  • Breastfeeding Support: If you’re breastfeeding, we’ll check how it’s going and address any challenges, such as sore nipples or concerns about your baby’s feeding.
  • Contraception: If you’re ready to think about contraception, we can discuss the options available to you and help you make an informed choice.

For Your Baby:

  • Growth and Development: We’ll check your baby’s weight, length, and head circumference to ensure they’re growing as expected.
  • Physical Examination: Your baby will have a full physical exam, including checking their heart, hips, eyes, and abdomen.
  • Feeding: We’ll review how your baby is feeding, whether breast or bottle-fed, and address any concerns you may have about their intake or feeding routine.
  • General Well-Being: This is also a chance to talk through any concerns you may have about your baby’s health, sleep, or development.
